Kickin’ it with Community

My birthday is next month and I always enjoy celebrating it— it’s a time when I gather with loved ones and celebrate our connections. I’ll be turning 42, which is so exciting! Every decade has brought fun adventures, new learnings, and deeper roots in communities. This last year I’ve had the pleasure of kickin’ it with some new communities. I’m sharing a couple of them with you this month—they also are communities you can enjoy too!

Gallery 2727

Located at 2727 California Street, Berkeley, CA, this cozy gallery hosts a variety of events—art exhibitions, jam sessions, concerts, film screenings, and more. I participated in my first open studios here through East Bay Open Studios in June.

Gallery 2727 also has an artist co-op. I applied and was accepted into it in the Fall. It was exciting to be part of their New Members Show that opened on February 6. The exhibition is still running until March 1.

I hosted my first collage workshop there earlier this month too! Here are a couple lovely pieces made by participants.

Sticky Rice Club

This nonprofit organization aims to strengthen community resilience in Oakland and the East Bay. I think that’s super cool.

Their work includes activating community spaces, offering healing workshops, and transformative art. All things that I resonate through my art practices.

Sticky Rice Club also hosts cultural celebrations like the Lantern Festival in Oakland Chinatown. I’ll have a Lunar New Year card collage table at this year’s event. Come through to make art and enjoy the festivities!

Participating in these spaces and connecting with the people who care for them are such gifts— the conversations we have, the joy we share, and the art we make are what make communities so special. Whether they’re communities you’ve been a part of for a long time or one you’re just getting to know, I’m happy you belong. I look forward to being in community with you soon 💜.
