How are you today?With everything happening in our communities and around the world, I've been asking myself this question a lot lately and earnestly asking those I care about this question. Checking in with each other matters, especially now. So really—how are you? The end of 2025 and beginning of 2026 have been full of transformation. East Bay Open Studios was incredible, connecting with friends and family nourished my soul, and I've been intentional about prioritizing what brings me joy. There have been challenges too—I was in a car accident, and while everyone walked away thankfully, I'm still healing. But even in the midst of navigating challenges like this, I'm also building something meaningful: making my art practices sustainable. Stepping back from taiko while I heal has been one of the hardest parts. I'm still teaching classes but have had to shift my approach to accommodate my limited capacity, for now. But it's also opened up something beautiful: more time to focus on collaging. I'm manifesting opportunities to share this practice with others, and I'm genuinely excited about where they are guiding me. On the days when I ask myself "how am I today?" and the answer feels heavy, collaging reminds me there's still beauty to make—art is always an answer. I'm sharing this because when someone asks "how are you today?" I want us to have space for honest answers—the laughs, the tears, and everything in between. Yes, we continue to live through difficult times. And yet, we resist: we make art, we show up for community, we check in with each other, we choose joy. Joy is resistance. And in that resistance, in that care, there's hope. That's what we can do. That's what we're already doing. As we transition from the Year of the Wood Snake—a year of shedding and releasing what no longer serves—into the Year of the Fire Horse, let’s lean into the strength, passion, and bold transformation the Fire Horse brings.
